EXQUISITE, LARGE AND STATELY PHOTOGRAPH OF EINSTEIN, SIGNED AND DATED in margin: “A. Einstein. 54”; additionally signed by the photographer Alan Windsor Richards.
Beautiful seated portrait of Einstein taken from the side, surrounded by books in his office at the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton. The image is a full 8.5x12.5 inches (11x14 inches with margins).
The photographer Alan Windsor Richards was the author of Einstein As I Knew Him. In his book, he recorded an illuminating conversation with Einstein about photography:
[Einstein] went on to say, “Have you ever stopped to think that a photograph can be very kind?”
“Well, I said, “Dr. Einstein, I don’t -- how do you mean, kind?”
This was his answer: “A photograph never grows old. You and I change, people change all through the months and years, but a photograph always remains the same. How nice to look at a photograph of mother or father taken many years ago. You see them as you remember them. But as people live on, they change completely. That is why I think a photograph can be kind.”
Princeton, NJ: 1954. Minor creases in margins. A beautiful, quintessential Einstein image.
