AN ICONIC IMAGE, POETICALLY INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY EINSTEIN.
Karsh is recognized as one of the greatest portrait photographers, and his photographs of Einstein are among the most famous images of the scientist. This superb photograph is from Einstein’s 1948 session with Karsh and was chosen to be the frontispiece for the book Albert Einstein, Philosopher-Scientist (first published in 1949).
Einstein had difficulty writing on the photo’s glossy surface, and he accordingly wrote the inscription twice (with some variation). The inscription in German is a poetic thought capturing both the moment of scientific insight and the quality of this photograph. It reads: “The grace of clarity often comes to you, in uniting precision and depth”.
Image size 9” x 8-3/4”. Karsh’s stamp on the verso. A FINE COPY.
