VINTAGE GELATIN SILVER PRINT BY LOTTE JACOBI AND SIGNED BY JACOBI in pencil in the lower right corner.
One of the 20th-century's most esteemed photographers, "Lotte Jacobi is best known for her portraits of famous historical personages whom she admired, including Albert Einstein" (Afterimage). Captured here by Jacobi while he was sailing in Huntington, Long Island in 1937, Einstein had been photographed earlier at the Berlin studio of Jacobi's father and also by Jacobi herself in 1927, before she, like Einstein, fled Germany in the 1930s. One year later Jacobi photographed Einstein for a famous series in Life magazine, and the two remained lifelong friends. Einstein greatly admired Jacobi, calling her his favorite photographer.
A wonderful image showing a relaxed Einstein with his pipe; in fine condition.
